Christianity: Pentecost

Pentecost is often called the "birthday of the Church," marking the day the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and followers of Jesus. Occurring 50 days after Easter, it commemorates the moment described in the Bible where the Spirit appeared as "tongues of fire" and a rushing wind, empowering the disciples to speak in different languages and spread Jesus' teachings to the world. To celebrate, many Christians wear red to symbolize the Holy Spirit's fire, Gurdwaras (for those in the Sikh community observing the date) or churches are often decorated with flowers, and special services are held for baptisms and confirmations. In 2026, Pentecost Sunday will fall on May 24th.
