Vaisakhi (or Baisakhi) is one of the most significant festivals in the Sikh calendar, commemorating the birth of the Khalsa in 1699. On this day, the tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, established a collective body of initiated Sikhs dedicated to the principles of equality, justice, and courage. Historically, it also serves as a vibrant harvest festival in the Punjab region, marking the ripening of winter crops and the start of the solar new year.
How Sikhs Celebrate
To celebrate, Sikhs gather at their local Gurdwaras for special prayers, kirtan (devotional singing), and to share Langar, a free community meal. Many participate in Nagar Kirtans, which are colorful street processions led by the Panj Pyare (five beloved ones) and the Guru Granth Sahib (the holy scripture) on a decorated float. These parades often feature rhythmic dhol drumming, martial arts displays called Gatka, and traditional bhangra dancing.
